Destination : Brussels

Founded in 977, cosmopolitan Brussels has withstood the buffets of a tumultuous history and been the pawn of political control by more than a few nations, resulting today in a rich, multicultural heritage that colors everything from lifestyle to cuisine. This centuries-old center of trade and commerce is home to both French- and Flemish-speakers, and is also the headquarters of the European Union and NATO. In Lower Town, Grand Place's baroque guild houses and Gothic town hall surround a landmark square that's the city's social and cultural epicenter. Another world-famous institution is the Centre Belge de la Band Dessinée which honors comic strip art. Visitors shop for couture, chocolates and lace and sip cappuccino with the well-heeled, yet scour the flea market and sup on mussels with city workers. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about Brussels is that you're welcomed in either place.
