It is impossible to visit Paris without taking in the 325 m Eiffel Tower. Built between 1887 and 1889, it is one of the most frequently visited monuments in the city.
Visit the Forum des Halles in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Opened in 1979, the 60 000 m² retail park has 168 shops.
Visit the glass pyramid of the Louvre in Paris (the Louvre Pyramid). Measuring 21.64 metres high, it was inaugurated in 1989 and was designed by the architect Leoh Ming Pei.
Parisians know how to party. On New Year's Eve, the Eiffel Tower sparkles from top to toe and a firework extravaganza lights up the sky. In summer, the River Seine's banks transform into a marvellous beach for Paris Plage. Fête de la Musique on June 21 is a midsummer's night of free music; culture lovers aim for nuit blanche in October, when museums open their doors free all night. There are serious moments such as July 14, when parades celebrate the storming of the Bastille prison and the start of the French Republic. And there are world sporting events: the French Open tennis tournament, Tour de France cycle race and Paris marathon. Beware: on public holidays, Paris shuts down and only a few restaurants and bars remain open.
